BumpTop, a 3D desktop for Windows has just launched by Anand Agarawala at the TED conference and after two years of beta testing. BumpTop allows you to arrange documents or folders on your computer screen just like the way you would organize your real physical computer desk. You can push, pull and pile different files and documents with elegant, self revealing gestures.
After installation is completed you will notice a 3D interface overlay over your existing desktop that allows you to stack files, pin-up reminders et cetera.
if I interact with my environment as I do with my work space? Here is the question underlying the project since 2006 BumpTop, which aims to reproduce, within the operating system, an organizational model similar to that found in real life, based on three dimensions and manipulation of objects. The concept comes to life in the form of an application that allows you to give relief and depth to the traditional Windows desktop.
Once installed, is superimposed on BumpTop desktop, and comes to enrich the possibilities with a number of interactions that are reminiscent of what is developing with Microsoft touch table, Surface. Specifically, the office should have an artificial depth, which allows you to have "virtual walls", similar to the partitions, the physical time, which can surround your workspace.
It will therefore be able to stick to walls, photos and documents, or to place shortcuts. Two links can also go directly to Facebook and Twitter. On the surface of the Bureau, you can manipulate documents via drag fluids, each being endowed with a certain inertia.
By the way some applications of gesture, BumpTop also interact with the elements that are visible on the desktop. For example, drag the mouse to the right while holding down the right click will increase the size of a picture or an icon, while the reverse movement decrease. There is also a system of notes, transposition of the famous virtual Post-It decorating our offices.
The Desktop is a crutch for disorganized people to transfer their real desktop mess into their computer and software like this, besides consuming video and RAM like crazy, encourage that messy behavior.
