Everything You Need to Know About 3D TVs

Everything You Need to Know About 3D TVs

Frequently Asked Questions About 3D TVs

So you think you have seen it all in television technology? There were the color CRT TVs, which still occupy pride of place in the living rooms of most Indian homes and are priced relatively lower than what followed. Then came flat-screen TVs, that initially used so-called "plasma screens", but now use LCD screens. More recently we have been seeing the "LED backlight" televisions, that consume even less power than LCDs and claim better picture quality. Such large video screens in the home are great for movies, taking you closer to the theatre experience without having to resort to projectors and the like. Nowadays 3D movies are touted as the next big thing, from sci-fi to sports, documentaries to kids' flicks. Is there a chance of recreating the same experience at home? Here's what you need to know about selecting the best 3D home-theater gear.

If you are to believe manufacturers, a 3D HDTV makes your images look brilliant, promises explosions that make you flinch and landscapes that seem to be rolling out of your TV. It is claimed to be the biggest breakthrough to hit home theaters in years. In case you were thinking of buying a 3D TV, just read through this FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) guide to prevent making any mistakes while buying. We give you the low-down on 3D TVs - what is true, what isn't and how the system works.

How does 3D TV work?

All 3D displays work by showing each eye a slightly different image, which creates the illusion that you're seeing something from more than one angle. For example, the classic red-and-blue "anaglyph" 3D glasses achieved this effect by using the colored lenses to filter red light to one eye and blue light to the other.

The drawback of the anaglyph method, of course, is that it practically obliterates the color from the image. Instead of using a light filter, current 3D TVs work by combining a pair of powered glasses (called "active shutter glasses") with a television that has an infrared emitter. When the TV plays a 3D movie, it alternates between displaying an image for the left eye and displaying one for the right; its infrared emitter instructs your glasses when to dim the left lens and when to dim the right lens to create the illusion of 3D.

This method is significantly different from the one used in movie theaters, by the way. Most 3D movies use glasses that are polarized (kind of like sunglasses) differently in the left and right lens; a special filter fitted to the movie projector allows it to switch rapidly between images for your left eye and images for your right. In principle, it's similar to the red-and-blue 3D system, except that it keeps the color intact (though the polarization does dim the image a bit).

In any case, if you forgot to return your movie glasses after watching Avatar, you won't be able to use them with a 3D TV, since it uses a completely different display technology.

What equipment do I need to be able to watch 3D content at home?

You'll need a 3D-capable HDTV, a pair of 3D glasses, and (if you want to watch 3D Blu-ray movies) a special Blu-ray player. Unfortunately, existing Blu-ray players available in the mass market won't quite cut it. For PlayStation 3 owners, Sony released a firmware upgrade in June to support 3D games, and the company is promising to provide a similar upgrade for 3D Blu-ray support in September.

As of now, it doesn't look as though you'll need to buy new HDMI cables or anything like that, so you may not have to spend on a special type of HDMI cable. Currently, a 3 metre long HDMI cable costs about Rs. 1,000 in the grey market, even with a non-prominent brand name label on it.

How can I tell whether my TV can display 3D images?

So far, only a handful of TVs from the big manufacturers can display 3D images: Samsung has a few higher-end LED-backlit LCDs (7000/8000/9000 series), plasmas (7000, 8000), and LCD TVs (750) that can handle 3D; other qualifying sets include Sony's Bravia XBR-LX900 series, LG's LX6500 and LX9500 televisions, and Panasonic's Viera VT25 line.

In other words, it's highly unlikely that you could possibly purchase a 3D-capable HDTV without realizing it. If you're still wondering whether your TV can show 3D images, just look it up on the manufacturer's Website--vendors aren't shy about promoting this capability on the relevant product page when they can.

LG, Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony are the only big-name TV manufacturers with entries in the 3D arena already, though models from Philips, Sharp, and Toshiba should reach the market in the next year or so.

My HDTV says that it's "3D-Ready." What does that mean?

A few manufacturers have sold TVs labeled as "3D-Ready." Many of the models in Mitsubishi's DLP HDTV line carry this designation, for example, as do a handful of Sony Bravia TVs. While the definition of "3D-Ready" varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, the term typically means that the set can display 3D content but lacks the IR emitter needed to sync the TV's image to the glasses--so you'll need to buy that separately. Also, because the 3D techniques found in DLP TVs ("Wobulating") sacrifice detail for a 3D image, if your source media is in 1080p ("Full HD"), it'll show in 3D at half that resolution

How much does a 3D TV cost?

The total cost of fully 3D-ifying your home-theater setup depends on such factors as the set's display size and other features. Generally speaking however, you're looking at investing at least Rs. one Lakh upon the set itself, plus anywhere from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000 for a 3D Blu-ray player and Rs. 7,500 for each additional pair of active shutter glasses (some TV sets will come bundled with one or two pairs).

What kind of content can I watch in 3D?

At the time of writing this, not much 3D content is out there. After you've spent a bunch of money on a 3D setup, you might very well find that you can't watch anything in 3D quite yet.

So far, few 3D Blu-ray movies are available (Amazon.com lists only Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Monsters vs. Aliens). In the US, sports fans can get ESPN's 3D channel, where 3D is available only for specific events on the schedule. You can be quite sure that 3D content through cable TV will be a long time coming to India. Aside from Blu-ray and ESPN 3D content, you could hook up your TV to your computer and play some of the more recent PC games in 3D mode. Of course, this demands your PC to be very up-to-date in terms of specifications.

3D gaming has begun to emerge as a big draw for consumers. In addition to the PS3 firmware upgrade mentioned earlier, PC gaming has supported 3D for a year and a half now via kits such as the nVidia GeForce 3D Vision, which you can pair with a compatible 3D display to run plenty of games in 3D. Wondering if your favorite titles will work in 3D? Check out nVidia's recommended 3D game list.

Can everyone see 3D images?

Regrettably, not everyone can see 3D. Somewhere between 4 and 10 percent of people simply can't see 3D images, though apparently the appropriate kind of stereoscopic vision can be "learned." Meanwhile, the disclaimers attached to 3D TV and theater displays are quite interesting. To judge from them, 3D TV isn't for the young, drunk, elderly, or pregnant, and watching it can actually cause disorientation, so you might want to hold off on buying a set until its precise effects are better known.

Can I watch regular 2D content on a 3D TV?

Yes, you can watch normal 2D shows on a 3D TV. (If you smirked to yourself while reading this, just remember that your friends and family will probably start asking you the same question during the holiday shopping season.)

Some 3D apps and devices offer support for upconverting a 2D source to 3D, though at this point such support comes mostly from Samsung's TV and Blu-ray lineup. The latest release of Cyberlink PowerDVD can upconvert to 3D with passable results, too. The upconverting modes probably won't make you want to re-watch your entire Blu-ray collection, but it's a promising start.

Do I need to wear those dorky glasses?

Yes--for now, at least. A number of companies are working on no-glasses 3D, or "auto-stereoscopic" displays, most of which use a lenticular lens system that displays a different image depending on where you're standing in relation to the display (if you've ever seen a movie poster that shifted as you walked by, it's the same idea). For the time being, however, it's substantially more expensive: a Chinese company named TCL sells such a 42-inch display for about Rs. 10 Lakh. Samsung is working on a lenticular lens display, too, though it's designed for commercial use (think flashy signs and such).
Will my 3D glasses fit over my corrective glasses?

Yep. All 3D glasses are designed to fit comfortably over corrective glasses, though you'll want to try a pair on before you buy them. Unfortunately, nothing is available on the market at the moment to make you feel like less of a doofus for wearing glasses over your glasses.

Will my glasses work on all 3D TVs?

Not quite. In the rush to hit the market with 3D displays, manufacturers never paused to hammer out a design standard for active-shutter glasses, meaning that your Panasonic glasses won't work with your friend's Sony TV. A few solutions may be in the works, though.

XpanD offers universal 3D active-shutter glasses that can determine the type of TV you're using based on its IR signal and adapt accordingly. We haven't tried them out yet, but the company claims that they work with most of the 3D displays on the market. In the meantime, you can use your Samsung glasses with Panasonic sets (and vice versa)--but only if you wear the mismatched glasses upside-down.

Comparison of the New Web browsers

Comparison of the New Web browsers

They are brand new and we've tested. Choose your next web browser.

Put on your waxed yellow and your boots! This week we take you off. In the open sea! But not on board any boat ... As for the race to which we invite you we invite you on board, the browser technology for surfing Internet. They are called Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, Opera or Safari. Think you know them, but they have just released a new version, or preparing to do so. And are already available at the prototype stage.

We do not doubt for a moment that you are sensitive to their large and small innovations. As you have always been, to the point that within a few years, many of you have even decided to change their habits by adopting a different browser. Thus, in December 2004, according to Net Applications survey, there were over 91% using Internet Explorer and only 4% to prefer Firefox. In February 2009, the situation has completely changed. There are more than 67% of you who use Internet Explorer, and nearly 22% have adopted Firefox. And there are now more than 8% to surf with Safari, Apple's browser.

Complementary functions

What justifies these changes normal? First, the ability of some browsers to display faster than other web pages. And, and importantly, their ability to display these pages. To do this, they must be able to interpret the technologies to which languages (JavaScript, HTML, etc..) Web development - we return to this point at the end of this file. But that's not all. A change in the browser is also justified because of its ergonomics are more or less successful. It includes, among other things, the possibilities of customization offered.

For example, Firefox has always distinguished by accepting a number of extensions (also called add-on or plug-in), that add additional functions to make everything and anything from one of its windows. Take a look at the site addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/, which includes all the add-on to Firefox. The idea is so good that Microsoft has endorsed suggesting also for some time, gallery extension, on www.ieaddons.com/en/.

However, for the three other browsers that accept them, but to a lesser extent, this type of add-ons, a little research on the Internet via a search engine is required (Google, Yahoo ...).

A race off, with the right wing

Ease of use is not to be outdone, rival publishers and ingenuity of today to beautify their browsers, while still making them more functional. We must recognize that the challenge is rather successful for each. For example, whereas Internet Explorer has fun cutting the web into slices, Safari offers you the flick. You will understand how in the following pages. And you will see, it's very useful.

But all this does not make you forget that a browser is still primarily a tool for surfing the Internet ... No need to board a trimaran, as modern and comfortable it is, if not available the right wing, capable of propelling you calmly in your courses to the sea!

Internet Explorer 8 : Key ingenuity and more

At first glance, the eighth version of the Microsoft browser offers nothing exotic. But if the interface remains effectively unchanged, we find the use, Internet Explorer 8 still reserve some good surprises. And this is real news.

More stable, Internet Explorer no longer crashes when a Web page is no longer responding. And, in case of sudden closure, it is able to restart, restore all open windows before this unfortunate incident. Then, it is more secure thanks to its SmartScreen filter that checks innocuous sites we visit. But that's not all ...

The Slices of Web in your favorites

Microsoft calls this the "Web Slices". But what's the point? For example, you send EBay an item and would like to follow the evolution of its price.

But how, without being connected to the site? When you pass the mouse over the product, a small green logo arises. Click above to create a new button in the task pane of Internet Explorer Favorites. Wherever you surfing now, clicking on this button displays a little window with the photo and all relevant information relating to the desired object. And when this change, the button flashes. Practice!

Of course, if EBay is today one of the first sites to use Web Slices, we can bet that others will soon get started.

Accelerator to go to the essentials

Accelerator? For iron faster? Not at all! Accelerators are part of the context menu of Web pages. That appears when you right-click a word or select a link. Accelerators allow you to quickly exploit the information you find on the Web in your software or online services preferred. For example, you are looking for a nice restaurant for tonight? You were well advised to go to Betty ... But where is the trendy new bistro? Select with the mouse the address found on the Internet, clicking on the button that has just come, and then click Locate with Live Search ... And now you stand on a map. Use another accelerator address to send this email, share it on Facebook ... hence Click Search other accelerators to see what you can do now without leaving a Web page!

Tabs with high color

On Google, you are looking for information about the latest U2 album. You open a link in a new tab. Look! Internet Explorer colors that tab such as the Google page. At a glance, and you see all the Web pages linked together. But be careful not to move a tab, because then it does more ...

Private navigation without trace

You do not want Internet Explorer keeps trace (history, cookies ...) of sites visited. Enable personal navigation. The filtering InPrivate "allows you to him, to prevent the sites you visit to forward - when you click on a banner advertisement, for example - information about you to another.

Safari 4 : a beta version

Is it because of its unpredictable success - for the record, Safari is now the third most used browser by Internet - Apple has decided to tweak, including Windows? Anyway, Safari 4 beta is proving to be a new year: very fast, stable, pleasant to use.

An interface adapted to the operating system

With this new version, Apple offers a browser that finally, in terms of ergonomics, fits perfectly not only for Mac OS X, but also to XP and Vista. Beta 4 and adopted the colors and buttons used in all software developed for Windows. This may sound ridiculous, but still takes away the impression that Safari gave the impression of being a Mac as it stuck in Windows.

His favorite sites at a glance

A new practice! Clicking the second button in the toolbar displays in the form of mosaic, at six, twelve or twenty-four sites you've visited most often. If you want some appear all the time, simply click on the Edit button, then pick the sites in question.

If, however, you want to delete the procedure is equally simple. Instead of clicking on the pin, you click the little X next to.

A highly visual history

If you're familiar with the interface of iTunes media player, you do not feel at home with Firefox! Apple has since resumed its principle of presentation of album one behind the other for consulting the history of visited Web pages. So you can browse through them, reducing the number of pages viewed by refining your search: Simply type one or more keywords into the search box in the upper right.

You also notice that Safari search these keywords not only in the title and address of the pages of your history, but also in their content. And that's really convenient!

Restart in case of improved crash

You are currently working on. You have a dozen browser windows open. Suddenly, your computer crashes! We've all been there one day and nothing is more detectable. Like Firefox or Internet Explorer, Safari is now able to reopen, all alone, all your browser windows unfortunately lost. You just need to pull down the menu History, Reopen all windows from the previous session.

Google Chrome 2 beta : back to basics

No revolution in sight for this young Internet browser will soon be compatible with Mac OS X and Linux. Google has preferred to focus on performance and announces 25% gain in speed compared to the previous version ... very fast! That is not to say that this beta version of Chrome 2 is totally devoid of news. But these are mainly to catch the face of competition with respect to basic functions such as managing the mouse wheel or the tabs. With this new version, Google Chrome seems therefore enter the age of maturity.

To enjoy now, is simple: you must download it.

History from the start

This is the first thing it shows for you: The History of the Web pages you visit most often. Practice for quick access to their favorite sites. But pity that this patchwork of only nine sites can be customized as proposed by one of Google's competitors, Safari.

The browser window closed

All browsers now offer a private browsing mode in order not to leave traces of its passage on some sites. Here is where Google is that it allows you to browse in confidence in one of its windows while browsing normally in others. To open a space for private browsing, simply pull down the Tools menu, New browser window closed. Not stupid!

Tabs that slide. Finally!

A little more handling can not refuse. Google's browser finally aligned on its competitors by allowing her to have tabs as you want. Catch them with the mouse, drag them ... That's it.

Windows side by side at a glance

A small tip is emerging. Drag a tab on the edge right at mid-height of the browser window, release it ... and here is your two pages displayed side by side on your desktop:

A AutoComplete forms

It's new in Google Chrome! The AutoComplete forms finally appeared. And it's still practice. By choosing what you usually type in forms on the Internet, Google Chrome may then suggest, early in the seizure of a field, complete for you.

Full screen to take in his eyes

Another basic feature missing in this browser: display full-screen Web pages. Press the F11 key to activate it. Again press the same button to display the site in a window, or move the mouse pointer on top of the screen and click on the link that appears

Firefox 3.1 beta 3 : ready for the Web of the future

It is a profound work that has been done on the new version of the most serious challenger to Internet Explorer. Do not expect any in a range of new features and a disruption of the inter face. In contrast, Firefox 3.1 browser looks like a stable and fast.

Its JavaScript engine, which allows software to run online, shows a significant performance gain. Moreover, memory consumption browser has been revised downwards. And he is already able to take you to sites using the Web technologies of tomorrow. A site that will integrate more and more videos, music, geolocation systems, software ... made using new standards for development. But frustration grabs you because you hope that Firefox 3.1 brings all the same news more visible? Do not worry, we've found some ...

Personal navigation to surf stealth

You do not want other users of your computer can see the history of your Internet browsing? Most browsers now seem to take seriously the privacy of Internet users ... Firefox did not cut and offers also a private browsing mode. It is activated through the Tools menu. But beware, all open windows then disappear to make way for a new one which will not keep track of web pages you visit. Thus, once completed private browsing, simply close the window to reappear all the others ... You can then resume normal activity.

Selective cleaning

If you do not choose to use personal navigation, Firefox offers another way to erase your tracks without losing all your browsing history. Pull down the Tools menu, Delete recent history ... A window appears allowing you to remove any trace of your last two, four hours, or the whole day. And you can even make the sorting! Choose, for example, to erase everything except the list of your downloads. It's a great idea.

A search in the multi-page views

Very easy to find a recently visited Web site! Simply type in the address bar, one or more words that will be searched in the title and address of all the Web pages listed in the History of Firefox. All you have to click the right link.

Tab window switching

You used to change the order of your browser tabs by dragging the mouse. Now, choose the same window where you want them placed. Enter a tab, move it to another window of Firefox, and place it where you want. Or drop it on the desktop for it to appear in a new browser window. So convenient that one wonders how it was before!

Videos played back without additional software

Able to watch videos in their browser without having to install third party software or plug-in. Admittedly, these are all on the developers of sites that will satisfy this novelty that will prevent them from using technology fee, as the Flash format used among others in sharing sites Video (YouTube, etc.).

Opera 10 Preview : still in the race

This Norwegian Internet browser has often been ahead of its competitors in terms of functions. Moreover, many of them have inspired Microsoft and the community of developers of Firefox, among others.

Still, Opera is far from being the most used browser. But this does not prevent them to follow his sweet way. And even to propose new features that are found nowhere else yet.

The latest version of Opera is not completed and remains to this day.

An improved display

With this new version, Opera fine-tunes its presentation. Emphasis was placed on the quality of text display, especially the Web and vector fonts.

For the record, the fonts are planned to be extended to infinity without distortion, or staircase effect.

A turbo in the engine

This is a very good idea to assume that everyone does not have an Internet connection or broadband good! Hence the presence of a small button with a timer at the bottom left corner of the Opera, on which you can click to activate the compression of web pages before they pass on your computer. Lighter, your pages load much faster. Besides the clock, Opera also shows the compression ratio of your pages. Side of the coin, all the same: if the loading of pages is undeniably faster, the quality of the images and photographs contained in particular is being deteriorated. Inevitably, they are compressed! So if you have no problem with speed, you will pass you by this office, however well thought out.

An integrated spell checker

Warning! There it was still only a preliminary version of Opera 10. Let us be indulgent to the fact that for the moment, his new spell checker does not correct the English.

Automatic updates

The Opera fans will appreciate, while others are probably wondering why it did not already exist ... This new version automatically detects updates and install them without asking for permission. It's even more convenient ...

HTML in your mail

Opera, this is not just a browser. It is also a message that can replace your usual software.

Except that, unlike the messaging software to the version of Opera 9, it was not possible to compose messages in HTML format. In other words, colorful messages, adopting a policy or another, using a letterhead, etc.. With the 10 version of Opera is now possible. Simply check the box Use HTML Formatting and then left free to creativity

The browsers test to test

As good to use these five browsers? Compatibility with Web technologies, speed ... Safari tops!

Request that there is to a browser if it is to be fast? In other words display as soon as possible web pages. Because there's nothing more annoying than having to wait ... We have evaluated the velocity of the five browsers with Peacekeeper, the new tool offered by Futuremark, a company specializing in performance testing software. You can do this yourself online test and verify the results we have obtained, by visiting the site Futuremark.com.

We evaluated five browsers on the same computer without running other software at the same time, or even touching the keyboard and mouse ... and without bias!

Safari 4, champion of speed

And it was that ... elbow to elbow with 2 Google Chrome, the beta of Safari 4 came out top! This is not surprising since both browsers use the same rendering engine. Internet Explorer 8, it is completely dropped. According Peacekeeper is 61% slower than Apple's browser. Opera is the surprise of this test, since it ranks third in front of Firefox. But these two browsers are respectively 21% and 33% less efficient than Safari.

Safari 4 and Opera 10, tied for display

We then submitted the browser Acid3 test. A test you can also try visiting the site acid3.acidtests.org. It submits the rendering engine browsers a series of tests to verify their ability to support standard Web technologies, and thus to correctly display the pages. Result? Only two of the five browsers fare with flying colors! Safari 4, which has already distinguished by its speed, and this time Opera 10, which is definitely a good surprise.

Note, however, it has been a hair for Google Chrome 2 join the winning combination, but the words "Link-test failed" on the results page of the test, we made several times, suggests a small problem. Surprisingly, Firefox 3.1 encounters hardship and password correctly that 93% of the Acid3 test.

As for Internet Explorer, it is again dropped with only 20% of successful tests and the appearance of the word "failed Linktest"

To each his own browser ...

The two sets of tests that we have submitted new versions of five major browsers now, Safari 4 is therefore the first of the class. But if we add the criterion of usability, perhaps you prefer to use another one. Because even in the drafting of Micro Hebdo, opinions differ! And anyway, whatever your preference, you will continue to occasionally use Internet Explorer to visit Web sites using ActiveX technology of Microsoft.

How To Master New Norton Internet Security 2009

How To Master New Norton Internet Security 2009

The 2009 edition of Norton Internet Security (NIS alias) is the fast, compact and economical resources. It is also full of new ideas and innovations. Discover the new Norton Internet Security 2009 and learn to master his new protections through 12 very useful steps.

Step 1: Maximum Speed, Minimum Occupation

Based on a complete makeover and more than 300 optimizations on the foundations of its protection, Norton Internet Security 2009 has a very low impact on the performance of the PC. Occupying only 10 MB on the hard drive and about 6 MB memory, it is undoubtedly a result of the lightest security market.

Norton Internet Security is so proud of this impact minimalist it does not hesitate to openly display its occupancy rate and provides the user with very interesting statistics.

From the home screen software, a small pad on the left shows the current CPU occupation of the system and part of Norton 2009 in it. By clicking on CPU usage, the software displays more comprehensive statistics, showing including memory and the history of Norton 2009 (what was called, when and if these actions have worked or not).

Quote:
Tip: The display of CPU usage can also specify the period of inactivity. Norton benefits from the time of not using the machine to trigger updates and scans. One can specify the length of time from which Norton will consider that the machine is really unused. By default, this period is 10 minutes. But it may be useful to extend to 20 or 30 minutes.

Step 2: Norton Insight

This is the main innovation of Norton 2009. Its technology "Insight" opens a new approach scan. We know, with over one million variants per year, the suites have to invent new concepts of protection. Norton Insight enables NIS / NAV 2009 to identify known files ( "malware" as "goodware") without having to compare to the millions of signatures. The result is an astonishing speed scanning, and a lesser impact on the system. This function is both used to speed up disk scans and to monitor the work in progress and draw your attention to any codes unknown and potentially dangerous.

* On the home screen, click on the link "Norton Insight"
* The program started when an analysis of tasks running on the machine
* The system queries the online community to learn more about the application that has not already classified as healthy.
* The program then displays a list of active tasks. Those are colorful Green certified healthy.
* The level of approval column indicates whether the file is certified healthy by "Norton" or certified healthy by the "community of users."
* When a file is not colored green, it is not known to the network Norton Insight. Therefore it will be systematically re-analyzed and monitored closely by the software.

Quote:
Tip: You must pay special attention to these tasks active non-colored green. They are potentially suspicious. Look at what the publisher, and above all, what is its star rating. This note is attributed by technology pro-active SONAR Norton studying the code and behavior of a file to define its dangerousness. A file that gets a score of 5 stars is a priori safe. However, a file that gets less than 3 stars is particularly suspect.

Protect Computers With New Norton Internet Security 2009

Step 3: Pulse Update

How to resist the avalanche of new threats when it was born more than a thousand per day? One of the tracks is regularly send signatures to users. Under Norton 2009, these updates are sent to users every 5 to 15 minutes (usually) by a mechanism called "Pulse Update". Most of the time, Norton 2009 awaits a time of inactivity to retrieve updates driven by servers.

* On the homepage in the computer section, note the presence of the link "Update definitions"
* It shows 2009 when Norton received its last update signatures
* Click for details

Quote:
Tip: If for any reason, your Norton has missed an impetus for updating, you can force the update of signatures by clicking on the link "Run Live Update" on the home screen.

Step 4: Analysis Network

The standard license Norton 2009 covers a three posts! So you can not only protect computers from the home with your CD Norton, but also from your PC monitor activity and the safety of other positions.

More surprising still, especially useful when using mobile and connecting to open WiFi points, Norton 2009 provides a "map" of the network on which you are connected and so graphically identify machines that are connected and to indicate their level of access to your machine.

Quote:
Tip: To force a maximum security:

* On the home screen, click View home network
* Click OK
* In "Details of the network," click Edit.
* Click Edit
* Select Restricted and click OK

All machines are as having limited access to your PC. But you can change this setting general for one or more devices on the network by selecting it and clicking Edit.

Step 5: Fashion Players

There are times when we prefer that the virus is carried as discreet as possible, and in particular it does not interfere with what we do, or slow down the machine at the least appropriate time. This is especially true when you play a game or watch that movie. Norton 2009 automatically detects when the "full screen" is used, and then passes automatically "silent".

* Click on Settings in the Computer
* Open the Settings Divers
* Locate the subsection Settings Silent
* Make sure the switch "Detection full screen" is set to Enabled

Quote:
Tip: You can switch Norton 2009 silent during a given period, even if not using applications in full screen. If you make an important task that does no notification, interruption or slowdown, proceed as follows:

* In the Home screen, click Using the UC
* Locate the switch "silent mode" and pass the position ON
* Select a time
* During the specified time, Norton remain silent and disable this mode once the deadline expired.

Scan And Protect With New Norton Internet Security 2009

Step 6: Programming Scans

Under normal circumstances, it is totally unnecessary to seek a scan disk or to schedule a scan disk in Norton 2009. The software actually uses the idle time of the system to automatically achieve a full scan. It is advisable therefore to ensure that the full scan is done on a weekly basis.

To do this:

* In the Computer section, click Settings
* Deploy the "Computer settings"
* In sub-section Analysis of the Computer, choose from the menu Weekly "Analysis period of inactivity."

If you prefer to return to a more conventional analysis that is made in a day and date, follow these steps:

* In the Computer section, click Settings
* Deploy the "Computer settings"
* Manage In the analysis, click Setup +
* Click on Planning, then click Yes
* Can specify the information programming task analysis.

Tip: You can check the list of machines that are banned by going to Settings, and then deploying the "Internet Settings" and selecting Set + at Autoblocker intrusion. The bottom of the list window shows you the machines currently prohibited communication.

Step 10: Advanced Control Program

If the firewall Norton Internet Security 2009 is minimally invasive and disruptive for a genuine two-way firewall is mainly because it only takes decisions by blocking and opening depending on what he hears applications and their use of the Internet.

However, users can have a very specific codes and programs to communicate through the firewall and adjust the behavior of firewall against them. In addition, this list has the advantage of being a comprehensive inventory executables communicating your system, and nothing as such, it deserves to be consulted regularly to ensure that spyware is lagging behind not recognized :

* Click Settings
* Deploy the Internet settings
* Locate the subsection Firewall intelligent
* Click the option Set Program Control

Microsoft is currently offering a hotfix designed to resolve the issue, but underlined that users had to be running Windows 7 Beta in order to apply the fix.

he Redmond company revealed that the problem was associated with the Beta Build 7000 of Windows 7, but said nothing about any superseding
development milestones such as Windows 7 Build
7048, 7057 or the more recently leaked Build 7068. According to the software giant at fault are the Offline Files service and the Client-Side Caching (CSC) driver, which fail to play nice together. Users running Windows 7 on Lenovo T60p, on Lenovo T61p, and on HP portable machines are at risk of having their data corrupted.

“Consider the following scenario. You have a computer that is running Windows 7 Beta. The Offline Files service and the Client-Side Caching (CSC) driver are enabled on the computer. In this scenario, you may encounter a data-corruption issue. This issue affects not only the files that are made available offline in the CSC database but also other files that may reside on the hard disk. For example, when your computer comes out of hibernation, the ChkDsk.exe tool may open and report a data-corruption error,” Microsoft explained.

Both the 32-bit and the 64-bit variants of Windows 7 Beta Build 7000 were affected, the Redmond company informed. Microsoft is currently offering a hotfix designed to resolve the issue.

“The data-corruption issue occurs because of interaction between the Offline Files component and certain storage drivers. These include the following Intel storage drivers: Iastor.sys; Iastorv.sys. These storage drivers are frequently found on the Lenovo T60p, on the Lenovo T61p, and on some HP portable computers,” the software giant added.

Google has designed a new server for its data centers

Google has designed a new server for its data centers

The server design combines low cost with high energy efficiency. It is noteworthy that the search giant its servers with 12V batteries to protect against blackouts.

It was already known that Google itself the standpoint of cost servers for data centers are built, but apart from some general details about the infrastructure and the used operating system, Google gave details on the hardware jealously secret. Google now has a tip of the veil lifted, the company in particular shows how the energy.

Striking at the display design is the presence of a 12V battery. This short time, the server powered by loss of supply. Google has chosen this solution because of the costs. Normally data centers for a reliable supply of energy assisted by large, centralized ups and which act as supply stopped. According to Google, it is cheaper to each server to be equipped with a battery. The advantage of this solution is that the cost increases linearly with the number of servers. "There is no wasted capacity-ups," says Ben Jai, server designer at Google.

The efficiency playing a role in the Google solution. Thus, large ups'en by maximum efficiency reaching 92 to 95 percent, while the server placed batteries an efficiency gain of more than 99.9 percent. Also, the diet of the Google server only 12V, the conversion to 5V and 3.3 V will take place on the motherboard. This is the sign or 1 to 2 dollars more expensive, but decrease the cost of food. The motherboard of the server showed that Google was built by Gigabyte, has eight memory slots and can accommodate up to two processors. The whole thing is caught in a 2U high enclosure. Google uses both Intel and AMD processors in its data centers and uses the battery design in his network.

The company also said that since 2005 all data centers using shipping containers used. These containers are each equipped with 1160 servers and have a total capacity of 250kW.

Goodbye, numeric cell phone keypads - QWERTY eases out 1-2-3

Goodbye, numeric cell phone keypads - QWERTY eases out 1-2-3

Goodbye, numeric cell phone keypads. You're going the way of the rotary dial. Touch screens and QWERTY keyboards will take over from here, thank you.

At North America's largest cell phone trade show, running this week in Las Vegas, there were few new phones for the U.S. market that had a numerical keypad instead of an alphabetic keyboard. Touch screens also were out in force.

These changes are a recognition of the popularity of text messaging and wireless Internet use. Industry organization CTIA Wireless, which hosts the show, said U.S. subscribers sent 1 trillion text messages last year, three times the 2007 volume. Meanwhile, the same people used 2.2 trillion minutes of voice calls, an increase of less than 5 percent.

This shift in how people use their mobile devices has overturned cell phone design. According to NPD Group, 31 percent of phones sold in U.S. stores in the fourth quarter of 2008 had full-alphabet keyboards, up from 5 percent two years earlier.

AT&T Inc., the second-largest wireless carrier after Verizon Wireless, introduced six phones this week, all of which had either a touch screen, a typewriter-style keyboard, or both. At the booth of Samsung Electronics Co., the largest seller of phones in the U.S., there were no new keypad phones.

Motorola Inc., the largest domestic maker of phones, was showing off one low-end handset with a keypad. It went on sale through AT&T two weeks ago. But Motorola's big news was a model called the Evoke, which has a touch screen. It's designed for the U.S. market, though it doesn't have a carrier distribution agreement yet.

LG Electronics Inc. displayed a new handset, the GD900, that seemed to both emphasize a numeric keypad and make it vanish. A pad slides out from the GD900's body, but it's made of transparent plastic, so you can see right through it. You don't need to use keypad at all, since the screen is touch-sensitive. Other new LG phones were also dominated by touch screens.

Even at the low end of the market, keyboards for text messaging are becoming common and affordable. AT&T expects to sell two of the keyboard-equipped phones it introduced, the Samsung Magnet and LG Neon, for about $20 to $30.

Old-fashioned numeric keypads still will have a prominent place — but largely overseas. In a twist of market dynamics, the demand for QWERTY phones is mainly a North American phenomenon, said Ross Rubin, an analyst at NPD.

Although touch screens are gaining in popularity all over the world, people in other countries got into text messaging much earlier and "became acclimated to texting with a keypad," Rubin said. Meanwhile, the U.S. market has been influenced by high-end smart phones like the Treo and the BlackBerry that pioneered small versions of typewriter-style keyboards.

As a result, numeric keypads were still dominant at the CTIA booth of Nokia Corp., the world's largest maker of cell phones, which has a relatively minor presence in the U.S. The same was the case at the booth of Japanese-Swedish manufacturer Sony Ericsson.

Other notable wireless devices at the show (prices are with two-year contracts):

• The Samsung Impression is the first phone on the U.S. market with a screen that uses organic light-emitting diodes rather than liquid crystals. Since OLEDs emit their own light, rather than filtering a fluorescent backlight like LCDs, they can save on battery life and provide better image quality. The Impression has a 3.2-inch touch screen capable of showing very saturated colors and dark blacks, and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. AT&T will sell the phone for $200 starting Tuesday. OLEDs have shown up before in camera displays, and Sony sells a small, expensive OLED TV.

• AT&T will sell the Nokia E71x, which is billed as the thinnest smart phone in the country, less than half an inch thick. The layout is similar to that of a BlackBerry or BlackJack, and includes a keyboard. Nokia has had a hard time penetrating the U.S. smart phone market, and previous, similar Nokia models sold by AT&T haven't made much of dent on the dominant market share of Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry. Despite being so thin, the E71x has a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus. The phone will cost $100. AT&T has no firm launch date.

• Sprint Nextel Corp. trotted out the Samsung Instinct s30, a follow-up to the first Instinct, which it introduced last year as a touch-screen competitor to the iPhone. The s30 has a thinner, more rounded body and includes a more fully featured Web browser. The s30 will be available April 19 for $130.

• Samsung is making a Web tablet for Clearwire Corp.'s wireless broadband network, which uses a technology known as WiMax. There are laptops and modems for the network, which is live in Portland, Ore., and Baltimore, but there hasn't been a standalone portable device for Clearwire since Nokia discontinued its WiMax tablet in January. Samsung's Mondi will go on sale in the next three months. No price was announced. It doesn't work as a phone, but it could run teleconferencing applications like Skype. The underlying software is Windows Mobile. Naturally, the Mondi has a keyboard and a touch screen, with a 4.3-inch diagonal.

AMD ships triple-core Phenom II chips

AMD ships triple-core Phenom II chips

AMD has added five new processors to its Phenom II desktop line-up, including the first triple-core versions to be produced with a 45nm process. The new chips broaden out its desktop platform to address a broader range of price points, the company said.

Available immediately, AMD's new chips consist of three quad-core and two triple-core processors. The quad-cores are the Phenom II X4 910 and 810, both clocked at 2.6GHz, and the 805, clocked at 2.5GHz. The triple-core parts are the Phenom II X3 720 and 710, clocked at 2.8GHz and 2.6GHz respectively.

The new chips are also the first AM3 processors, which will be able to use faster DDR3 memory once compatible motherboards become available in the future.

Kevin Lensing, product manager for desktop platforms at AMD, explained that the new products build on the momentum of the Dragon desktop platform announced in January, which introduced the first 45nm Phenom II processors.

"These chips fill out the line-up of available Dragon CPUs, and offer a greater breadth of solutions out to more price points," he said.

The two new 800 series chips feature a smaller total cache memory size (6MB versus 8MB) than the 900 series Phenom II chips that debuted as part of Dragon, but come in at a lower price point.

AMD claimed that its chips offer better performance for the price than comparable Intel parts, showing results that give the Phenom II X4 810, which costs $175 (£120), a six to nine per cent performance lead over the Core 2 Quad 8200, which costs $170 (£116), under the SysMark 2007 and PCMark Vantage benchmarks.

Meanwhile, the triple-core Phenoms offer better performance than dual-core Intel chips while shipping at a lower price, according to AMD. The Phenom II X3 720 costs $145 (£99) against the Core 2 Duo E8400 at $165 (£113), but with performance between 13 and 35 per cent higher, the company said.

"In multimedia applications, we find performance scales well with the additional core for tasks such as rendering and transcoding," said Lensing.

The Phenom II X3 720 is also a so-called 'Black Edition' processor that can be overclocked using AMD Overdrive software.

While the new processors are the first to support AMD's AM3 socket infrastructure, they are fully compatible with current AM2+ motherboards, enabling buyers to upgrade at a later date.

"The good news is that, as the price of DDR3 comes down, we are fully enabled to deliver that transition at a pace that suits our customers," Lensing said.

The AM3 platform is widely expected to launch sometime during the first quarter of 2009, but Lensing declined to specify a date, stating only that "we are ready to launch AM3 products at any time".

Upcoming Firefox release changed from 3.1 to 3.5

Upcoming Firefox release changed from 3.1 to 3.5

Mozilla has announced that the latest version of its Firefox browser will be changed from 3.1 to 3.5, and that the fourth beta will be published on 14 April.

"The version number of the Shiretoko project will be changed to Firefox 3.5 before the upcoming fourth beta release," wrote Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's director of Firefox, on the Mozilla developer blog.

"Add-on developers should stay tuned for announcements about what this means for their extensions and themes hosted on addons.mozilla.org. We expect to be able to do this with a minimum of inconvenience to our community."

The change in name from 3.1 to 3.5 was first proposed last week to recognise "the sheer volume of work which makes Shiretoko feel like much more than a small, incremental improvement over Firefox 3", according to Beltzner.

Enhancements include better user control over data privacy, improved web layout and rendering, and the TraceMonkey JavaScript compiler.

Mozilla posted the 3.0.7 update of its Firefox 3 browser only last week, promising multiple security patches and stability fixes. The five security fixes included three which addressed flaws rated as 'critical' by Mozilla.

Sanyo aims to up the capacity of Blu-ray discs to 100GB

Sanyo promises 100GB Blu-ray discs

Sanyo aims to up the capacity of Blu-ray discs to 100GB

Japanese electronics firm Sanyo has announced a new type of blue laser diode, which it said could double the capacity of existing Blu-ray discs to 100GB.

Although still under development, Sanyo claimed that the new laser could support drives that can write to Blu-ray discs at 12x speed over four layers of 25GB each.

Current Blu-ray recorders can write at speeds of around 6x, with some 8x burners due out soon.

However, with a write speed of 12x this means the drive would have an effective writing speed of 432Mbps, allowing a 100GB disc to be filled in under 10 minutes.

The biggest current drawback is that, in order to be able to write to four layers instead of two as is the case today, the new beam emits 450mW, nearly double the 250mW from existing lasers.

Further development and the need for approval from the Blu-ray Disc Association means that drives sporting the breakthrough diode could be a few years away yet, but Sanyo hopes products will be available before 2011.

Some observers have commented that the plunging costs of digital storage has effectively rendered optical drives useless.

However, many organisations still see it as an effective method of data backup and an easy way of transferring large amounts of data via post or courier, meaning that many could find the doubling of capacity and the huge increase in write speed to be a major advantage.

IBM unveils Lotus Notes 8.5

IBM unveils Lotus Notes 8.5

IBM has released version 8.5 of its Lotus Notes/Domino collaboration software, bringing updated support for the Apple Mac platform and improvements to the way attachments are handled that should lead to welcome savings on storage requirements.

The new release includes enhancements to both client and server components. On the client side, IBM said that Mac OS X users will now get the same experience as Windows and Linux users, which is one reason why the 8.5 version is being announced to coincide with the Macworld 2009 show in San Francisco.

"As near as we can make it, the Mac version now has parity with other platforms," said Darren Adams, IBM's Messaging and Collaboration business unit leader for the UK & Ireland.

While earlier Notes releases were developed for the PC and then ported to the Mac, the move to the Eclipse platform has allowed IBM to develop components that can run cross-platform, Adams explained. The growing popularity of the Mac also drove development.

"A lot of organisations are now looking at the Mac, and it is growing in usage worldwide," he said.

Among other enhancements, Notes users across all three platforms will now be able to make use of the built-in Lotus Symphony OpenDocument Format editors for office documents, while the Calendar tool now allows users to subscribe to, and overlay information from, other calendars, such as a group calendar, within their own system.

However, the most significant improvements in Notes/Domino 8.5 are on the server side. Chief among these is a feature that decreases the storage space taken up by email attachments by up to 70 per cent, according to IBM.

Domino Attachment Object Storage only stores an attachment once per server, regardless of how many instances exist in user inboxes.

"Prior to 8.5, if you sent an email to 20 people all of them had a local copy of the file, which meant it took up 20 times the storage space," explained Adams.

The new way of handling attachments also has the knock-on benefit of boosting overall server performance, and decreasing the time required to back up user mail accounts.

Another new feature, ID Vault, helps firms to manage user IDs by centralising them onto a server. This makes life easier for users who access email from more than one computer, as well as making it easier for admins to back up ID files.

For developers, XPages brings to Notes/Domino many of the features of modern web applications based on Ajax, according to IBM.

Adams said that XPages will allow developers to build new applications or update existing ones with better views and search capabilities, enabling more dynamic applications.

The new capabilities could give a boost to Notes, which many observers feel has been gradually losing market share to Microsoft's Exchange in the corporate groupware sector.

Lotus Notes/Domino 8.5 will ship ahead of IBM's Lotusphere 2009 conference that starts on 18 January, and will be available under the same licensing model as current versions of the software.
