Review - Acer DX900 Smartphone

Review - Acer DX900 Smartphone

With a dual SIM card reader, the Acer DX900 is able to simultaneously manage two mobiles.

This smartphone, with Windows Mobile 6.1, is a copy of the line almost Glofiish DX900 E-Ten, bought by Acer. His interest lies in its location for two SIM cards to meet in a single terminal two uses: personal and professional.

The Promises

All your lives in one pocket is the promise made by users of Acer DX900, the first smartphone manufacturer. Its particularity is to incorporate a dual SIM card slot, namely the ability to manage two separate lines from a single terminal. Legacy of manufacturer E-Ten acquired by Acer in 2008, the formerly-DX900-DX900 Glofiish is also a smartphone running Windows Mobile 6.1 which has an overlay software to improve the navigation, thus facilitating the task of the user. Should you swap two phones against this new device? We tested to answer this question.

The Reality

Fully touch ie no physical keyboard, the DX900 is the first device in the Tempo range of Acer (eg range Gloofish E-Ten). With a screen size correctly about 7-inches diagonally, this phone lacks finesse: the cost, obviously, to integrate two SIM card slots. So he will not forget in a shirt pocket or pants (1.7 cm thick), even if its weight is relatively reasonable (147 g).

The design of the device, however, is relatively plain with its black hull, such as soft touch to the rear. Ergonomics base is satisfactory, too, with a standard headphone jack (3.5 mm), a MicroSD slot easily accessible on the side, and three shortcut buttons to the photo, to that of voice (Voice Commander) and the pause of the screen.
Two lines simultaneously manageable

Regarding the management of two telephone lines, the principle is simple: it slips two SIM cards, which can absolutely come from different operators, at sites 1 and 2 located under the battery. Only the first can manage a subscription type HSDPA (3.5 G), while the second is limited to networks EDGE/GPRS. At the user to make the right choice if he wants to take advantage of the Internet in a mobile situation. At home or office, the smartphone can indeed connect at Wi-Fi, which is proving to be the simplest and most effective. Once the mobile switched on, the PIN of lines 1 and 2 will be requested. Users can simultaneously manage both lines receive calls on either one or the other or issuing calls to choose from first or second. Only restriction, it is not possible to establish a conference between the two lines. The user can, however, to wait in line 1 he calls on the 2.

A virtual keyboard for lilliputian

Named SPB Shell, the interface developed by E-ten with SPB Mobile Software has not been modified by Acer, like most of the phone features. However, in the next models, M900, F900 or X960, this interface will be abandoned in favor of a more elaborate overlay. The SPB Shell does not, however, lack of attractiveness, partly recalling the navigation interface of HTC TouchFLO.

In addition to the Windows Mobile Classic, a mere slip of the finger on the screen, the user does succeed 3 customizable home pages. The main functions appear as large icons 3D. Pressure is sufficient to reach the sub-menus to the graphics in the form of cube principles successfully by LG for its Arena. The only true failure of the SPB Shell virtual keyboard completely unusable without the help of the stylus. And we must have good eyes, even with an automatic display in landscape mode (the DX900 integrates an accelerometer).
Autonomy unconvincing

The smartphone features multimedia functions relatively well in terms of picture and music. A condition of buying a memory card (there are a hundred MB free internal memory), this model can quite play MP3 pocket. The quality of pictures is, however, quite acceptable and many effects, fairly original, are proposed in the options. Only the video recording, limited resolution (320 x 240 pixels) remains the domain of the gadget and there is no FM radio player. More disturbingly, despite a 1530 mAh battery, since the device is applied in the field of multimedia and mobile Internet, autonomy vertiginously fall. Better to keep a charger at hand or the USB cable to recharge your mobile through a computer. Finally, unlike the model Glofiish, the DX900 Acer comes without GPS navigation software. it will be necessary to make the acquisition.

Truth

Even if the DX900 is not the Windows Mobile smartphone in the most exciting time, it is one of the few devices to accept 2 SIM and allow the simultaneous management of two lines. Therefore difficult to ignore, especially since it is relatively well equipped. Regrettably, however, the little virtual keyboard ergonomic and self improvement.
