Directory and Naming Services Terms

· BER - Basic Encoding Rules used by LDAP for strings.

· COS - Common Object Services lets applications access references to CORBA objects.

· DAP - Directory Access Protocol

· DN - Distinguished Name is used to uniquely define LDAP entries.

· DNS - Domain Name System is the IP (Internet Protocol) name 6i5] kto computer name service used on the internet and internal networks. It maps computer names to IP addresses and vice versa. This naming system is statically updated with new names by administrators.

· DSA - Directory System Agent

· DUA - Directory User Agent is used by applications and clients to access the LDAP directory.

· JNDI - Java Naming and Directory Interface is an interface rather an implementation, as its name implies. It only acts as a means to access a specific naming service such as LDAP. Java uses a set of classes to support the JNDI interface.

· LDAP - Lightweight Directory Access Protocol is a directory service which is lightweight version of Directory Access Protocol (DAP).

· NIS - Network Information System is a naming service developed by Sun Microsystems which allows user access to applications and files on any server using a single user ID and password.

WINS - Windows Internet Name Service is a dynamic naming service that is updated as computers are booted or shut down. It is used on corporate networks and may be used in conjunction with DNS
