Google to launch music service to rival iTunes
Forget powerful smartphones and tablets launched at MWC 2011 thus far, an accidental slip from a Motorola executive revealed Google's plans to launch a music service alongside Android 3.0, one that will give Apple's iTunes music store a run for its money, according to reports.
Google already launched a music service late last year -- remember Google Music? But this latest report promises the upcoming Google music announcement to aim squarely at breaking Apple iTunes' and Amazon's global dominance over online music sales.
According to The Guardian, Sanjay Jha, Motorola Mobility CEO, said "If you look at Google Mobile services [via Android] today, there's a video service, there's a music service – that is, there will be a music service." Speaking at MWC 2011, Mr. Jha also said that Android 3.0's Honeycomb will add "video services and music services" to tablets running on Google's OS.
So yeah, that's the only indicator of Google's proposed music service plan right now. And it's likely to be unveiled alongside the Honeycomb and Motorola Xoom launch within the next couple of months.
I sincerely hope Mr. Jha meant Google's Music service is going to be launched at the Android Honeycomb/Xoom event, and that it's not just restricted to Android 3.0 as a music service for tablets. Otherwise the question of challenging iTunes or Amazon from a tablet ecosystem alone is ludicrous right now.
