India Next On Radar For Wikipedia?

India Next On Radar For Wikipedia?

On 15th January 2011, Wikipedia will complete ten years of its existence. It does not want to stay content being one of the largest online encyclopaedia sites at the turn of a new decade. According to Wikipedia Executive Director, Sue Gardner, it hopes to increase readership in India and Brazil, to add to its numbers that are already amazingly large.

Claimed to have 410 million unique visitors a month, Wikipedia has a goal of reaching one billion users within the next five years. However, being run by a non-profit foundation, it operates on a budget of only US$ 20 million a year, an amount mostly raised through donations. The site has 17 million English articles, with 1,100 more being added each day.

Creating and editing them for accuracy are a lakh regular contributors, in addition to general visitors, all of who do what they do for free. About 270 languages are present on Wikipedia, including English, and they are adding articles in Indian languages too, according to an interview given by Sue Gardner to Reuters. Visitors from India at least, also get to see the below logo and appeal, to convince them to participate.

Its first office outside of the United States will open in India this year. Also, 60 of its 316 events to mark its tenth anniversary are set to be held in India. At the same time that Wikipedia is trying to prevent vandalism of content and preserve quality of pages with the help of editors, there seems to have also been a conscious decision to not subject itself to filtering/censorship, by not moving into China just yet.
