Mobile Number Portability Goes Official Today
More than a year of dithering, confusion and god knows what else, later Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is rolling out today across the country. An IBN Live story quotes Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal, “We're very happy that we are going to launch it nationally tomorrow. It's a great step forward for the consumer. It enhances his choice.”

According to the new MNP rules, you can change between the service providers in your circle and state but not beyond that. For instance, if you are moving from Delhi Bangalore, you can’t use MNP to keep the same phone number but can do so if you are changing service providers within Bangalore. Also, once you shift to a new service provider, you can’t shift again for the next 50 days.
So how do you change service providers without changing numbers? Here’s how:
1. SMS PORT (in all caps) (space) (your number) to 1900.
2. Your service provider should send you a unique porting code.
3. Visit the customer centre of the service provider you want to switch to with the requisite documents.
4. They will ask you to fill up a porting request form. In that form quote your unique porting code.
5. The porting fees- Rs. 19- will be deducted from your balance and your phone network will cease working for about an hour. Within 48 hours of when you submitted the documents, you should have ported over to the new service provider.
A couple of other things to keep in mind:
1. You can shift from GSM to CDMA or vice versa.
2. In case of a pre-paid number, your balance will not be carried over to your new provider.
3. In case of a post-paid number, all your dues should be paid up before you can port.
4. You will also need to procure a new SIM from your new service provider.
