Facebook to allow HTTPS access, after Zuckerberg's page hack

Barely a day after Mark Zuckerberg's fan page was hacked, Facebook announced it will roll out the ability for users to access the popular online social network securely via an HTTPS connection through their Web browsers.

Facebook stated on its developer blog the most recent security change to the online social network. The new feature -- the ability to access Facebook via a secure HTTPS connection -- will help keep "account activity private even when using Facebook from a public internet access point or Wi-Fi network," Facebook said.

Facebook's move to enable HTTPS access to users comes close after Mark Zuckerberg's fan page was hacked a day ago, although the announcement isn't related to Zuckerberg's page hack. It's a good step to preserve user security -- most online banking transactions are carried over HTTPS' encrypted connection. Google switched Gmail's access to HTTPS last year.

Facebook said it will enable the secure HTTPS connection feature for users "over the next few weeks." It will be an opt-in feature -- users will have to tick it in the Account Security section of their Facebook Account Settings page.

Meanwhile, Facebook is also trying to woo app developers to make their Facebook apps HTTPS-friendly and accessible over a secure connection -- which currently they aren't. If developers don't provide app access over a secure HTTPS connection, Facebook will "display a confirmation page to let HTTPS users switch to HTTP" and continue onwards to the app.
