Acer AspireRevo R3600 mini-PC - Review
The Acer AspireRevo R3600 is a mini-PC at low cost to be placed behind a screen or a television. It can decode Full HD feeds and will be delivered with a remote type Wiimote.
Acer successfully propels the Nvidia Ion platform by offering a mini-PC economic performance for multimedia.
The promise
When Nvidia was passed to us last year to present its Ion platform, we were packed on one side had given us a choice of writing and the other reserved for the marketing power of Intel is such that we feared that the novelty is nipped in the bud. But manufacturers are listening to the general public and as Intel has been able to draw graphics chip rival since the Ion, it was natural that a great industry as Acer eventually integrate this chip into a machine. And this machine is AspireRevo.
The reality
Recall that Ion chipset is all-in-one with an integrated graphics chip. The value of the solution is twofold since the chipset, normally composed of two chips is concentrated into one and includes a graphics far more efficient than its competitors from Intel, the GMA 950 and X3100. For manufacturers, it is a chip to integrate less and this facilitates the design of motherboards. Ion is a platform that can be added Atom processor as is the case here in AspireRevo, but Nvidia has already announced the availability of its chip for Via Nano processors and boasts power of the integrate with other solutions including ARM.
The AspireRevo details
If you bothered to cast a glance at the sheet, the AspireRevo in short, it is a mini-PC that contains an Atom processor, an Ion chipset, 6 USB 2.0, e-SATA, a HDMI output, a VGA, an SD card reader and a network input/output sound with bonus Wi-Fi version 802.11 b/g. As you can see, this is a very complete machine side connections and functions. If you know the NETBOOK these miniport economics, in short AspireRevo is the same thing, but over-equipped. And with a chip that Ion, you will understand, improve it. And improve it a bit of a euphemism.
With the Ion, the Atom has found his best friend
You've tried to decode a stream with your HD NETBOOK? No? Well if we, and it is usually a fun frank: it decodes an atom 6 fps in Full HD. But then, the Atom has a new boyfriend: the Ion. And then, either in the files of the encapsulant mkv H.264, DivX HD wholesale or read a Blu-ray on a USB drive as the LG BE6LU10, decodes the AspireRevo without any worries.
If playback of Blu-ray takes a lot of time to load-fault in the USB-there is really nothing wrong decoding side if it is a temporary mismatch between sound and image when the we advance the film to the hussar. But the icing on the cake is undoubtedly the occupation of the processor that does not exceed 50% in Blu-ray and is limited to 20-30% in HD files on the hard drive. Understand that the programs in the background continue to run normally.
The game occasionally bonus
While some hard play games on their nettop or NETBOOK (towers economic and Minilaptops economic), they are usually small dating games. With the AspireRevo, the range of possibilities is growing, although this is not the primary objective. As requested by Nvidia, we will communicate the results of accurate benchmarks (performance tests) that the April 28, but we can tell you that AspireRevo is 16 times more effective than a NETBOOK/nettop core: the day and night. So much so that even the recent games - Call of Duty Modern Warfare and Spore-, turn and run.
Attention, this is an atom and a graphics chip input range: it is running, but gently, lower level of detail and 800x600 or 1024x768. In addition to games pre-installed on our test version, we've installed Steam with Heroes of Might and Magic V, Half life 2 and Down of War's first name. In the first two cases, the game running properly on 1024x768 low detail. In the case of Dawn of War, old game, it was running perfectly in 1024, all details thoroughly. In short, you will understand, although less powerful than classic tour, the AspireRevo can take quite a fun video.
The use of the beast
If the possible applications of the machine are numerous, Vesa media (for the set behind a screen) shipped with AspireRevo leave no doubt as to the placement of the product for Acer: It is a machine to be installed behind a TV or LCD screen. For professionals, it will be a desktop machine. For the general public, it will be a PC/media player that plays movies shared on the network and that connects to the Internet. Or the first PC for kids or grandparents. The targets are many, the potential of the machine is real and particularly attractive given the price, ie the same as other nettop, but graphics performance and more.
And for the hackers, inside the machine is easily accessible and very clean you can easily change the hard disk, increase the RAM or change the Wi-Fi card
Small critical
We start with the keyboard and mouse: If the first we felt very nice with its keys "chiklet" (ie like the Vaio and the MacBook), we would have preferred a wireless kit. Given the price, it was probably impossible, we go the sponge.
Then the intrinsic performance of the Atom and Vista are limited weighs heavily on the poor CPU. Acer could grow to 3 GB of RAM for all this fluidity, but again the price ultracompress we put a flat, but urged Windows 7 for performance improvement with 2 GB.
The future of Ion with Acer
Regarding the current AspireRevo, the options are already ready: Acer announced a Webcam specifically dedicated for use on medium Vesa, which exceeds the top of the TV and a Wii remote for the games. As for a version with optical drive, it seems as Acts is not interested. Even his bell for NETBOOK where according to a source at Acer: "nothing is being prepared for the moment." But of the declensions Ion could multiply if the first experience of AspireRevo is a success. Given the economic climate and current uses of computing, this small machine full potential clearly has a nice card to play.
Once again, Acer followed Asus in the success by going even further. As was the case for-NETBOOK, Acer has sold more than its competitor in 2008 - Acer has taken the idea of integration of the Atom in a small PC by adding the chip that makes all the difference. So, it is not enough to be the first ...
The truth
It is the same price as other nettop but it did much better: the AspireRevo was a frank success. Where its competitors are drying on the multimedia and 3D, the AspireRevo supported by its Nvidia Ion chip is a real player movies in HD to hang behind the screen or television. Add to this a silent operation, supports Vesa, the cradle and the keyboard mouse kit delivered basic and get the mini-PC the most interesting economic time.
