Firefox Hits 20% Browser Share Worldwide

One in five web surfers prefers Mozilla Firefox to any other browser.

Mozilla is reporting that Firefox topped 20% of the worldwide market share for web browsers for the first time ever in October, 2008. Firefox broke the 20% mark twice last month, once during the week of October 5, and once again during the week of October 26. During the other two weeks, its share was around 19.8%, putting the average for the month just above below the 20% mark at 19.9%

The numbers come from Net Applications, a data service that tracks browser usage across the globe. Head to Net Applications’ Market Share website to view the full report.

The open-source browser enjoys different levels of success in different countries, but it has long held its status as the second most popular browser in the world after Microsoft Internet Explorer. Lately, though, IE’s market share has been eroding as more competitive features are built into Firefox and as Mozilla has stepped up its marketing efforts.

Internet Explorer’s share dipped to 71.27% in October, representing a 7% slide from the 78.36% share it recorded during the same month in 2007.

Firefox’s usage still sits somewhere in the 15-18% range for the U.S. and Canada. But in some European countries, Firefox’s browser share is closer to 30%.
